Tilghman
Island
Situated about 10 miles from St Michaels, Tilghman Island is really
another world. Surrounded by the Chesapeake it is an authentic
fisherman’s village dating back three centuries. This was the
fishing center of the Chesapeake, the home of the Bay Watermen, who
developed the log canoes and skipjacks, venerable
watercraft
symbols of the
Chesapeake. There are only a few skipjacks left, providing a unique
link to the past and Tilghman Island is the home of the last commercial
sailing fleet in the country.
The rich history of the island is characterized by the colorful
accents of the islanders, dating back to their heritage in the
English Lowlands. There are only 900 residents here who are well
known for their industrious and hospitable lifestyle.
There are
lots of attractions for a small island. How about a
sailing trip on an old skipjack, or fly
fishing for sea bass on a charter boat or a trip around the bay
visiting historic lighthouses? When you are hungry take your choice
of rustic seafood
restaurants overlooking the waterways or dining in an atmosphere
of quiet sophistication at one of the charming
inns. Tilghman Island – it’s worth the effort to come here!
