Oxford

Oxford is one of Maryland’s oldest towns and the earliest seaport. Situated at the end of the Tred Avon River, it was formerly a busy harbor with a famous shipbuilding and fishing center. It is relaxed and tranquil, charming in appearance. Most of the village and waterfront can be seen on foot by strolling on old brick walks under the canopies of stately trees. There are many fine restaurants, some on the water and others sprinkled around the town.

Oxford takes its boating very seriously. There are several marinas and boatyards in town and Oxford claims to be the sailboat racing center of the mid-shore area. During summer weekends, the broad Tred Avon River is full of picturesque sails from the juniors practicing closed races to the major sailing craft that participate in off-shore races throughout the world.

Oxford’s famous icon, the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry has been in existence off and on since 1683, providing a shortcut across the Tred Avon between the St Michaels area and Oxford. Another prominent landmark, the Robert Morris Inn, is a very popular resting place for visitors and it is renowned for its Chesapeake blue crab cakes.
