Easton The principal town of Talbot County is Easton, which was originally the colonial capital of the Eastern Shore. It has been ranked by two publications as one of the top 10 small towns in America. Recently, Easton became a “dreamtown,” the 4th best place to live in the nation and noted for its outstanding quality of life. The study identified the small communities in America that are the most attractive places to move. The highest scores went to towns with strong economies, light traffic, moderate cost of living, first class educational systems and good access to a large metropolitan area.
Easton’s 12,000
inhabitants take pride in the historical atmosphere of the town as
well as its rich colonial legacy. A walk through town will introduce
you to many charming shops, beautiful shade trees, gardens and brick
walls, along with a delightful blend of old buildings and homes.
Modern Easton is an arts and cultural center, popular for its
museums, art
galleries, antique stores, unique gift shops, and a performing arts
center, the
Avalon Theater. It is the hub of activity amongst the
neighboring communities along the magnificent Miles and Tred Avon
Rivers. One of the most popular activities is a bike ride or an auto
trip along a circular route connecting the three towns, one leg of
which is a fascinating ride on the 320 year old
Oxford-Bellevue Ferry. Celebrating the return of migrating geese, Easton hosts the famous Waterfowl Festival during the second weekend of November. Almost 20,000 visitors converge on the area to enjoy the wildlife art - paintings, sculpture duck carvings and fascinating natural history exhibits of the Eastern Shore.
